ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Nationally 16th-ranked Cortland won five straight matches to erase an early 7-0 deficit and the Red Dragons defeated host Rochester Institute of Technology, 31-10, in a dual match between Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference foes.
Cortland, now 5-1 on the season, started its run with a pin by freshman
Brian Bistis (Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central) at 141 pounds. Junior
John Cataldo's (Wantagh/MacArthur) 5-3 decision at 149 pounds gave the Red Dragons a 9-7 lead and a 11-2 major decision by freshman
James Ondris (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) at 157 pounds extended the score to 13-7.
Sophomore
Jonathan Conroy (South Plainfield, NJ), ranked eighth nationally in Div. III at 165 pounds, earned a 6-3 victory and freshman
William Maldonado (Mastic Beach/William Floyd) pinned his opponent in 6:08 at 174 pounds.
Cortland's other two victories were a pin in 1:55 at 197 pounds by nationally fourth-ranked sophomore
Jared Myhrberg (Queensbury) and a 5-0 decision by sophomore
Corey James (Kingston) at 285 pounds.
James improved to 15-1 and Conroy is now 15-2 on the season with their victories. Myhrberg is 11-1 with five pins, Bistis is 13-4 with seven pins and Maldonado is 12-5 with five pins.
RIT (0-4) was led by Mike McInally, the second-ranked wrestler nationally at 133 pounds. He won by a 15-4 major decision. Shin Wakabayashi earned a 6-1 victory at 125 pounds and Tyler Brent won 6-4 at 184 pounds for the Tigers.
