Jessica Laing (Bloomville/South Kortright) finished with 22 points and 12 rebounds, including 17 points and eight rebounds in the second half, as Cortland defeated Geneseo in the SUNYAC women's basketball tournament semifinals, 64-51.
The top-seeded Red Dragons will be making their 15th appearance in the league championship game and their 10th in the last 12 years. Cortland will face third-seeded New Paltz, an 82-79 winner in four overtimes over second seed Oneonta, for the title Saturday at 4 p.m. New Paltz is making its first SUNYAC championship game showing.
Cortland is 24-3 and won its 19th straight game, the third-longest winning streak in school history behind a 22-game streak in 1999-2000 and a 21-game run in 2006-07.
Senior
Miranda Lustig (Medford/Patchogue-Medford) added nine points, eight rebounds and four assists to the Red Dragons' winning cause. Sophomore
Micki Volpini (Newfield), sophomore Allyson Biordi (Beacon) and junior
Jennifer Patten (Bainbridge/Bainbridge-Guilford) scored seven points apiece and Biordi matched Lustig with four assists.
Brittany Finkle (Windsor) led fourth-seeded Geneseo (16-11) with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Melissa Graham (Orchard Park/Mt. Mercy) also scored 14 points and Bri Dunton (Middlesex/Marcus Whitman) led all players with six assists.
Geneseo led 22-18 on a Lisa Rufer (Niskayuna) three-pointer with 7:46 left in the first half, but Cortland finished the period on a 14-0 run to lead 32-18.
Jen Polan (Westhampton/Westhampton Beach) started the run with a three-pointer and Lustig made 5-of-6 free throws during that stretch.
Cortland led 38-24 with 16:29 remaining, but Geneseo came back and got within 42-38 on back-to-back three-pointers by Graham with 12:30 and 11:45 remaining. The Red Dragons responded with an 11-0 streak that featured seven points by Laing, and the lead was 53-38 with 7:51 left. Cortland was up by at least nine after that.
