OSWEGO, N.Y. – Cortland won three of the final four matches to pull away for a 25-12 win over host SUNY Oswego in a dual match at Max Ziel Gymnasium. The nationally 14th-ranked Red Dragons improve to 15-3 with the win and the Lakers are now 3-9.

Cortland held a 13-9 lead after six matches. Senior Mike Ciaburri (Palmyra/Palmyra-Macedon) extended the margin to nine points with a 16-0 technical fall at 174 pounds. Ciaburri is 21-7 on the year. Oswego, however, received a 9-7 victory by Ethan Phillips at 184 pounds and trailed 18-12 with two matches left.

Senior Martino Sottile (Brentwood) sealed the victory for Cortland with a 12-4 major decision at 197 pounds. Senior Joe Murphy (St. James/Smithtown), ranked 10th nationally at heavyweight, concluded the evening with a 6-0 victory and is 28-5 on the season.

Cortland opened the night with a 14-2 major decision by freshman Sean Kempf (Wantagh/MacArthur) at 125 pounds. Kempf is 18-6 with the win. Oswego followed with a win by forfeit at 133 pounds and led 6-4.

The Red Dragons responded with three straight decisions. Sophomore Mike Pagano (Merrick/Calhoun) won 4-1 at 141 pounds for his 18th victory, sophomore John Cataldo (Wantagh/MacArthur) was a 5-2 victor at 149 pounds and junior Cory Mahoney (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy) won 6-4 in overtime at 157 pounds for his 21st win.

Mahoney led Nick Rodgers 4-3 entering the third period, but Rodgers recorded a takedown with eight seconds left to take the lead. Mahoney was awarded a point for riding time, however, to force the overtime and scored what proved to be the winning points on a takedown in the first tiebreaker.

Oswego’s Marc Collins won 5-3 at 165 pounds to pull the Lakers within four points.
