JAMESTOWN, N.Y. – Three Cortland wrestlers won weight-class titles as the Red Dragons competed at the Jamestown Open at Jamestown Community College. Junior Cory Mahoney (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy) won at 157 pounds, freshman Jon Conroy (South Plainfield, NJ) was the 165-pound champion and senior Martino Sottile (Brentwood) finished first at 197 pounds.

Mahoney posted a 4-0 record to win the 157-pound title. After an opening 2-1 decision, he won 10-0 in the next round and 5-2 in the semifinals. He defeated Max Murray of the host school, 10-4, in the title match.

Conroy and sophomore Eric Ekstrom (Palmyra/Palmyra-Macedon) claimed the top two spots at 165 pounds. Conroy won two of his first three matches by pin, while Ekstrom’s 3-0 start included a 10-2 major decision. In the championship match, Conroy edged Ekstrom by a 2-1 count in overtime.

Sottile finished 3-0 to claim the 197-pound title. He started with convincing victories in his first two bouts, 12-5 and 15-3, and beat Ithaca’s Tom Heckman, 3-1, in the finals.

Freshman Will Parks (Longwood) was the other Red Dragon to earn a top-four finish with his third-place showing at 184 pounds. He won his first match, but lost in the semifinals. He rebounded to win his next two matches, including a 3-1 decision over Ithaca’s Keith Dickey in the third-place contest.
