SUNY Cortland senior forward
Jessica Laing (Bloomville/South Kortright) has been selected as the 2009-10 D3hoops.com women's basketball East Region Player of the Year. She was also chosen to the All-East first team for the fourth consecutive season and is now eligible for D3hoops.com All-America honors.
In addition, Laing is one of 40 national finalists, including five from the East region, for Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA)/State Farm Division III All-America honors. Ten players will be chosen for first team All-America recognition, with the other 30 players earning honorable mention status.
The WBCA has also tabbed Cortland 12th-year head coach
Jeannette Mosher as its East Region Coach of the Year. Mosher, who also was named the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Coach of the Year this winter, guided the Red Dragons to a 25-4 record, a SUNYAC title and an NCAA tournament appearance.
Laing led Cortland this season with 20.4 points and 12.4 rebounds per game. She shot 43.3 percent from the field and 79.6 percent from the foul line, and led the Red Dragons with 41 three-pointers. Laing recorded points-rebounds “double-doubles” 23 times in 29 games this season and 77 times in 117 career games.
Laing averaged at least 16 points and 10 rebounds per game in each of her four seasons at Cortland. She finished with career totals of 2,166 points and 1,305 rebounds, both school records. She is only the 10th player in NCAA Division III history to reach the combination of 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds, and the only player on that list to also make at least 100 three-pointers (136). Laing graduates as the all-time leading scorer and second-leading rebounder in the 27-year history of SUNYAC women's basketball.
