Cortland Wraps Up Unbeaten SUNYAC Slate with 20-3 Win vs. New Paltz

CORTLAND, N.Y. –  The nationally ninth-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team jumped out to a 12-1 halftime lead and went on to defeat New Paltz, 20-3, in SUNYAC action Saturday afternoon at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex. With the win, the Red Dragons improved to 13-2 overall and finished 8-0 in the conference, earning the right to host the league tournament on May 7-8. The Hawks dropped to 3-9 and 0-6 with the loss.

Sophomore Kelly Radigan (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) scored a game-high five goals for Cortland, which had 10 players tally at least one goal in the game. Sophomore Lindsay Abbott (South Onondaga/Onondaga Central) registered three goals and two assists, and freshman Maria Di Fato (Camillus/West Genesee) contributed two goals and three assists. Seniors Jess Fritz (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) and Nicki Mahoney (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy) and freshman Taylor Harney (Patchogue/Patchogue-Medford) each had two goals and one assist. 

Freshman Laura Edward (Blue Point/Bayport-Blue Point) chipped in with a goal and an assist, while junior Bri Shost (Mahopac), sophomore Erin Kollar (East Islip) and freshman Gina Campese (East Syracuse/East Syracuse-Minoa) netted one goal apiece. Freshman Ally Levy (Reisterstown, MD/Seton Keough) started in the cage and made two first-half saves. Freshman Carissa Ficarro (Minoa/East Syracuse-Minoa) played the second half and did not stop a shot.

Freshman Julianne Rehain (Suffern) led the Hawks with a pair of scores, and freshman Erin Tornatore (Glen Cove/North Shore) scored once. Sophomore goalie Margaret DeLauter (Bellmore/Mepham) registered 14 saves.

The Red Dragons wasted little time in taking control of the game, grabbing a 5-0 lead less than 10 minutes into the contest. Tornatore put New Paltz on the scoreboard at 19 minutes, 24 seconds, but Cortland closed the half with the final seven goals, including three off Radigan's stick, to take a 12-1 advantage into the half.

Mahoney and Abbott scored early in the second half to stretch the lead to 14-1 before Rehain netted her first of the game at 23:37 of the half. Four different Cortland players followed with goals and the Red Dragons led, 18-2, at the 11:42 mark. At 9:53, Rehain tallied her second of the game from the free position, and Di Fato and Kollar completed the scoring with goals at 4:55 and 2:05, respectively.
