Red Dragons Sink Lakers, 17-4

Freshman Beth Vogelsang closed out the game with her first two career goals
OSWEGO, N.Y. – Freshman Maria Di Fato (Camillus/West Genesee) scored a career-high five goals and added an assist to lead the nationally ninth-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team to a 17-4 win at Oswego Saturday afternoon in SUNYAC action at Laker Field.

Cortland senior Nicki Mahoney (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy) matched her career high with four goals and five points set Friday versus Potsdam, and freshmen Gina Campese (East Syracuse/East Syracuse-Minoa) and Beth Vogelsang (East Islip) each scored twice. Sophomore Lindsay Abbott (South Onondaga/Onondaga Central) recorded a goal and three assists, senior Jess Fritz (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) had a goal and two assists and sophomore Jordan Miller (Liverpool) chipped in with a goal and an assist for the Red Dragons (6-1, 2-0 SUNYAC). Freshman goalie Ally Levy (Reisterstown, MD/Seton Keough) made four saves.

For Oswego, senior Marisa Audley (Liverpool) scored twice, and senior Jessica Zenzel (Johnson City) and junior Maria Martusewicz (Redwood/Watertown) each scored a goal. Freshman goalie Ashlee Engel (Webster/Webster Thomas) stopped 15 shots.

The Lakers opened an early 2-1 lead as Audley and Zenzel sandwiched goals around Mahoney's first score. The Red Dragons, however, netted the final 11 goals of the first half, the last three from Mahoney, to take a 12-2 lead into intermission.

Di Fato then scored three of the next four goals to open the second half with Audley collecting her second for Oswego and Cortland's lead grew to 15-3 with 18 minutes, 33 seconds remaining. Martusewicz tallied her goal four and a half minutes later before Vogelsang closed the game with her first career goals in the final 1:20.
