Cortland Top Seed in NCAA Softball Regional at Ithaca College

The SUNY Cortland softball team has earned a berth into the NCAA Division III tournament for the fourth straight year and will be the top seed in an eight-team, double-elimination regional Thursday through Monday, May 13-17, at Ithaca College's Kostrinsky Field.

The Red Dragons (38-6) earned an automatic berth into the national tournament after winning the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) tournament in Cortland last weekend. Cortland will play Thursday at 10 a.m. versus eighth-seeded Keuka College (23-8).

Other first-day matchups include fourth-seeded Alfred University (34-6) versus fifth-seeded King's College (Pa.) (22-16) at noon, third-seeded Lebanon Valley College (Pa.) (31-11) versus sixth-seeded Polytechnic Institute of New York University (31-9) at 2 p.m., and second-seeded Ithaca College (30-13) versus seventh-seeded Dickinson College (Pa.) (19-17) at 4 p.m.

The Cortland-Keuka winner will play the Alfred-King's winner Friday at 2 p.m., while the Cortland-Keuka loser will play the Alfred-King's loser at 10 a.m. The championship round is scheduled for Sunday at 2 p.m., with a final game, if needed, slated for Monday at 10 a.m.

The regional winner will advance to the NCAA Div. III World Series May 21-25 at Carson Park in Eau Claire, Wis.

Cortland will be making its 16th NCAA appearance, including its 10th under 16th-year head coach Julie Lenhart. The Red Dragons have advanced to the World Series five times during Lenhart's tenure – each of the last two seasons as well as 1998, 2003 and 2004 – and six times overall.
