Donnalyn Cross, Katie Finch Repeat as Softball All-Americans

Donnalyn Cross led Division III with 15 triples - her second straight season as the national leader in that category
SUNY Cortland junior second baseman Donnalyn Cross (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) and senior pitcher Katie Finch (Amsterdam/Broadalbin-Perth) have been chosen to the 2010 Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III All-America Team.

Cross was selected to the All-America first team for the second straight season. Finch was named to the All-America second team for the second year in a row, and graduates as a three-time All-American. She was a third-team honoree as a sophomore in 2008.

The All-America teams were announced on Thursday, May 20, at a banquet on the eve of the NCAA Division III World Series in Eau Claire, Wis.

Four Red Dragons earned NFCA All-Northeast Region honors. Cross, Finch and junior outfielder Brooke Weidman (Perkinsville/Wayland-Cohocton) were first-team selections, while senior first baseman Emily Ringen (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock) earned second-team recognition.

Cross led Cortland with a .416 batting average, a .682 slugging percentage, 21 stolen bases and 47 runs scored, and led Division III nationally with 15 triples, in 47 games. She also totaled eight doubles, one homer and 23 RBI and posted a .962 fielding percentage (seven errors in 184 fielding chances). She broke her own school record for triples in a season and is the SUNYAC career leader in that category with 32 through three seasons.

Finch finished the season with a 26-4 record, a 0.68 ERA and 12 shutouts in 33 appearances, 28 as a starter. She allowed only 86 hits and 25 walks and struck out 268 batters in 184 innings. Finch ranked first nationally in Division III in ERA, second in hits allowed per seven innings (3.27), tied for fourth in shutouts and seventh in strikeouts. She threw three no-hitters, including two perfect games. Finch finished her career as the SUNYAC leader in wins (93) and strikeouts (1,025), and became the 11th player in Division III history to surpass 1,000 career strikeouts.

Weidman batted .358 with two doubles, two triples, 30 runs scored and 14 RBI in 46 games. She was second on the team with 10 stolen bases and did not make an error in 32 fielding chances. Through three seasons, Weidman has handled 112 fielding chances without committing an error.

Ringen finished with a .408 batting average, 10 doubles, three home runs and a team-high 38 RBI. She was second on the team with 18 walks and committed only two errors in 322 fielding chances at first base. Ringen concluded her career as only the fifth player in school history to record 100 RBI (113).

Cortland finished the season with a 40-8 record for the third-highest win total in school history. The Red Dragons made their fourth straight NCAA tournament appearance and won both the regular-season (18-0 record) and postseason State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) titles.
