CORTLAND, N.Y. – Sophomore
Lindsay Abbott (South Onondaga/Onondaga Central) scored four goals and dished out one assist to lead the nationally sixth-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team to a 10-4 win versus 20th-ranked Brockport in the final of the SUNYAC Tournament Saturday afternoon at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex. With the win, the Red Dragons improved to 16-2 on the season, captured their 12th consecutive conference title and earned their 12th straight NCAA Div. III berth. The Golden Eagles fell to 12-3 with the setback.
Freshman
Maria Di Fato (Camillus/West Genesee) scored two goals and added two assists and was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. Sophomore
Kelly Radigan (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) scored twice, senior
Jess Fritz (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) had a goal and two assists and senior Nicki Mahoney (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy) scored once. Freshman goalie
Ally Levy (Reisterstown, MD/Seton Keough) made seven saves.
Sophomore Carly Motondo (Syracuse/West Genesee) led the Golden Eagles with two goals, while freshman Sarah Brown (Syracuse/West Genesee) had a goal and an assist, senior Melissa Hill (Rochester/Brighton) scored once and sophomore Dayna Piraino (Syracuse/Henninger) chipped in with an assist. Junior goalie Jamie Kaminsky (Oakdale/Sayville) stopped 14 shots, including 10 in the first half.
Cortland led just 4-3 at the half as the teams took turns grabbing the lead. Abbott opened the scoring 28 seconds into the game and Brown answered at 26 minutes, 43 seconds to knot the game at 1-1. Abbott gave Cortland back the lead off a Fritz assist at 22:29, but Motondo and Hill scored goals three and a half minutes apart to put the Golden Eagles up 3-2 at the 16:39 mark. Radigan closed the half with back-to-back goals at 13:57 and 3:18 and the Red Dragons headed to the break with the 4-3 edge.
Abbott tallied the first goal of the second half from the free position at 22:30, and Motondo answered with her second of the game off Brown's assist at 21:53 and Brockport trailed 5-4. From that point, the game belonged to Cortland as the Red Dragons netted the final five goals of the game, two from Di Fato, to earn the win and the NCAA berth.
Joining Di Fato on the all-tournament team were Abbott, Fritz, Mahoney and sophomore
Jordan Miller (Liverpool) from Cortland; Brown, Hill and Kaminski from Brockport; senior Caryn Quinn (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) and junior Anna Hutchings (Syracuse/Westhill) from Geneseo; and junior Molly Seifritz (Liverpool/Henninger) and sophomore Kendyl Clarkson (Painted Post/Corning West) from Buffalo State.
