BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Cortland took top honors in two individual events and one relay on its way to a second-place finish at the eight-team State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
The Red Dragons scored 160 team points and finished only behind Geneseo’s 176 points. Oneonta placed third with 112.5 points, followed by Buffalo State (97), Brockport (96.5), Plattsburgh (95), Fredonia (58) and Oswego (13).
Freshman Nicki Schafer (Troy/Columbia) led a top-three Cortland sweep in the heptathlon with her winning score of 3,899 points. Freshman Katie Darling (Delhi/Delaware Academy) finished second with 3,512 points and sophomore Brenna Filipello (Delmar/Bethlehem) was third with 3,377 points.
Freshman Christi Nassauer (Mount Sinai) won the pole vault league title by clearing 3.26 meters (10’ 8.25”). Senior Nicole Ragard (Binghamton/Susquehanna Valley) and junior Sarah Wignall (Weedsport) each cleared 2.81 meters (9’ 2.75”), but due to number of misses, Ragard finished sixth and Wignall was ninth.
Cortland won the 4x400-meter relay as sophomore Veronica Montrose (Clintondale/Highland), senior Mallory Baker (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa), freshman Alexis Fairbanks (Apalachin/Owego Free Academy) and freshman Lex Grable (Pine Bush) finished in 4:03.14. The Red Dragons earned runner-up honors in the 4x100-meter relay behind a time of 50.27 seconds from sophomore Brittani Sahm (Phoenix/John C. Birdlebough), sophomore Jenna Evarts (West Islip), Montrose and freshman Erin Militello (Rochester/Gates-Chili).
Evarts was fifth in the 100-meter dash (13.25) and sixth in the 200-meter dash (27.97). Sahm placed sixth in the 100-meter dash (13.55) and Montrose placed fifth in the 200-meter dash (27.94).
Fairbanks finished second in the 800-meter run (2:20.72) and freshman Jordyn Naylon (Fairport) placed second in the 1,50 meters (4:58.96). Grable and Baker finished third (1:02.43) and fourth (1:03.81), respectively, in the 400-meter dash.
Cortland earned four of the top eight spots in the 5,000-meter run. Sophomore Alyson Dalton (Sherrill/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) was third (18:14.95), senior Lisa Holt (Phoenix/John C. Birdlebough) placed fourth (18:34.80), junior Erin Keaveney (West Hempstead/Kellenberg Memorial) finished sixth (18:44.32) and junior Kristin Vespa (Ossining) crossed the line eighth (19:01.28).
In the javelin throw, sophomore Ashley Gansle (Loudonville/Shaker) finished third with a distance of 28.78 meters (94’ 5”) and freshman Chelsea Lachman (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) was fourth at 25.54 meters (83’ 9.5”).
Lachman also finished third in the shot put at 10.90 meters (35’ 9.25”) and was one of three Red Dragons to place in the top seven of the discus. Freshman Jessica Andrianos (Camillus/West Genesee) finished fourth in the discus (34.86 meters – 114’ 4.5”), Lachman was fifth (34.67 meters – 113’ 8.75”) and freshman Karli Johnson (Mount Sinai) finished seventh (34.34 meters – 112’ 8”).
Freshman Alana Hotchkiss (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse) and freshman Amber Stephens (Stony Point/North Rockland) each turned in top-six showings in both the triple jump and long jump. Hotchkiss was fourth in the triple jump (10.76 meters – 35’ 3.75”) and fifth in the long jump (4.83 meters – 15’ 10.25”), while Stephens was sixth in both events with a 10.60-meter (34’ 9.25”) triple jump and a 4.62-meter (15’ 2”) long jump. Stephens also scored at the meet with her eighth-place time of 17.82 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles.
Junior Caitlin Triantafillou (Getzville/Williamsville North) finished fourth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:08.53).
ALL-CONFERENCE NOTE: Individual first-place finishers at the conference meet earn first team All-SUNYAC honors, while second-place individual finishers earn second team All-SUNYAC honors. Therefore, Christi Nassauer and Nikki Schafer are first team all-conference, while Alexis Fairbanks, Jordyn Naylon and Katie Darling are second team all-conference.
