CORTLAND, N.Y. –  Senior BreLynn Nasypany (Herkimer) scored two first-half goals and assisted on another late in the game to lead the nationally 16th-ranked William Smith women's soccer team to a 4-2 win versus Cortland in the season opener for both teams Wednesday night at Holloway Field.

For Cortland, senior Carly Williams (Emerson, NJ) and sophomore Stacey Wood (New Hyde Park) each scored a second-half goal, while junior Jackie De Luise (Schenectady/Guilderland) and senior Maura Martin (Rochester/Gates-Chili) recorded one assist apiece. Senior goalie Pam Monnier (East Northport/Northport) made seven saves.

Sophomores Renee Jensen (White Plains) and Morgan Gibeault (Mendon, VT/Rutland) also scored goals for the Herons, and junior Mary Jameson (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia) and sophomore Emily D'Addario (Farmington, CT) each collected an assist. Junior goalie Amanda Davis (Landing, NJ/Roxbury) stopped four shots, and D'Addario cleared a Cortland shot off the line.

Nasypany gave the Herons a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute after having three good scoring chances earlier in the game. D'Addario fed a long pass through the middle of the field that Nasypany ran onto and finihed off with a low shot inside the right post. Just over two minutes before halftime, Nasypany netted her second of the game with a shot from the left side that tucked inside the right post.

William Smith aapeared to have the game well in hand after Jensen deposited a penalty shot inside the left post in the 59th minute for a 3-0 lead, but the Red Dragons reponded with a pair of goals less than 15 minutes apart to pull to within 3-2. Williams struck first with an 18-yard one-time shot that settled in under the crossbar in the 64th minute, and Woods followed with a one-time rebound goal in the 78th minute after Davis punched away Martin's long free kick. The Herons, however, sealed the win as Cortland pressed for the tying goal. On a quick counter, Nasypany was denied by a diving save from Monnier, but the rebound went to Gibeault, who was able to send a 20-yard shot into an open goal.
