Red Dragons Drop ECAC West Game vs. Neumann

Junior Maggie Giamo's goal late in the third period pulled Cortland to within 4-2
CORTLAND, N.Y. - Four different players scored goals as the Neumann women's ice hockey team defeated Cortland, 4-2, in ECAC West action Friday night at Alumni Arena. With the loss, the Red Dragons fell to 2-13-2 overall and 1-8-2 in the conference, while the Knights improved to 9-6-3 and 6-6-1.

Juniors Shannon Hakes (Rochester/Rochester Edge) and Maggie Giamo (Orchard Park/RIT) netted Cortland's goals with juniors Pam Murphy (Rye/Northwood School) and Jen Whelan (Langhorne, PA/Neumann College) and sophomore Taylor Puckhaber (Lake Placid/National Sports Academy) and Kellie Micillo (Sayville/Suffolk PAL) collecting assists. Sophomore goalie Sarah Sitcov (Arlington, VA/Wyoming Seminary) registered 26 saves.

Junior Kayla Dubowski (Emeryville, ON/Windsor Jr. Wildcats), sophomore Lynsey Nakamura (Pickering, ON/Etobicoke Jr. Dolphins) and freshmen Edie Brenning (Greely, ON/Nepean Jr. Wildcats) and Dru Austin (Goderich, ON/Susquehanna Rapids) each scored for Neumann. Junior Diane Peters (Leamington, ON/Windsor Jr. Wildcats) recorded two assists. Sophomore goalie Allie Frank (Phoenix, AZ/Chatham University) stopped 19 shots.

Hakes gave the Red Dragons a 1-0 lead, five minutes, 52 seconds into the game when she deflected Murphy's shot from the left point past Frank. The Knights tied the game at 11:26. Nakamura forced a turnover inside the blue line and scored on a wrist shot from the slot.

Austin gave Neumann the lead, 2-1, at 5:25 of the second period when she scored on a one timer from the left side that Sitcov gloved but lost over the goal line. The Knights netted the first two goals of the third period to open up a 4-1 lead. At 3:18, Dubowski tallied a short-handed score after she stole the puck and skated in alone on Sitcov. Brenning finished Neumann's scoring at 13:39, burying a wrist shot into the upper corner. Giamo completed the scoring in the game at 18:26 when she deflected Whelan's shot from the point past Frank for her first of the season.

The two teams meet again on Saturday at 3 p.m.
