Conroy Pin Helps #27 Cortland Beat #23 Delaware Valley, 19-18

Jonathan Conroy's pin in the evening's second-to-last match proved to be the difference
DOYLESTOWN, PA. – Sophomore Jonathan Conroy's (South Plainfield, NJ) pin in the next to last weight class of the evening lifted nationally 27th-ranked SUNY Cortland to a 19-18 road victory over 23rd-ranked Delaware Valley College. The win improved the Red Dragons to 12-4-1 on the season while the Aggies saw their record drop to 6-7-1.

The hosts took a 15-13 advantage with just two bouts to go after nationally top-ranked and returning All-American Jesse Harrington used a third-period takedown to earn a 3-2 decision over sophomore Troy Sterling (Uniondale) at 157 pounds. Conroy took an early 4-1 lead versus Mike Chiappetta at 165 pounds, but Chiappetta's reversal cut the lead to 4-3. Conroy, however, quickly recorded a reversal of his own and turned it into a pin with 36 seconds left in the first period.

The six team points gave Cortland a 19-15 lead and forced Delaware Valley to record at least a major decision (8+ points) at 174 pounds to win the match. Cortland freshman James Ondris (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) battled with returning national qualifier Dan Daddino and lost a tight 5-4 decision, with the decisive point coming on Daddino having more than one minute of riding time. The close outcome clinched the team victory for the Red Dragons.

Cortland opened the match with three straight decisions for a 9-0 lead. Sophomore Will Parks (Shoreham/Longwood) used a takedown 30 seconds into the third period to post a 3-2 decision over Jake Phillips at 184 pounds, while a second-period takedown was the difference in nationally fifth-ranked Jared Myhrberg's (Queensbury) 3-2 victory over Aaron Karns at 197 pounds. Sophomore Corey James (Kingston), ranked seventh at heavyweight, followed with a 5-2 triumph over Zeke Pyle.

Delaware Valley, which has suffered all seven of its losses and one tie versus top-30 nationally ranked teams, got back in the match when Charlie Frankel earned a pin versus Sean Kempf (Wantagh/MacArthur) at 125 pounds. Kempf led 4-0 and nearly pinned Frankel before Frankel registered a reversal and eventually the pin 2:25 into the first period.

The Aggies took a 12-9 lead with decisions by Zac Haynes at 133 pounds and returning All-American Matt Ulrich at 141 pounds. Cortland regained the lead at 13-12 as sophomore Andre Berry (Uniondale) picked up a 12-3 major decision over Emmanuel Ajagbe at 149 pounds.

Cortland will wrestle at Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pa., on Saturday at 4 p.m.
