Cortland Crushes Oneonta, 22-4, to Open SUNYAC Slate

Freshman Joe Slavik registered four goals and one assist
ONEONTA, N.Y. – Twelve different players scored goals, led by four each from junior Mike Tota (Webster/Webster Schroeder) and freshman Joe Slavik (Binghamton/Seton Catholic), as the nationally fourth-ranked Cortland men's lacrosse team rolled to a 22-4 win at Oneonta Saturday afternoon in the SUNYAC opening-game for both teams.

Seniors Chris DeLuca (Sayville) and Jay DiStefano (Huntington/Harborfields) and freshman Mark Panneton (Niskayuna) added two goals and one assist for Cortland (5-2, 1-0), while sophomore Thomas Casey (Yorktown) scored twice. Seniors Vincent Brites (Lindenhurst) and Mike Oppito (West Babylon) and freshman Brian Winterfeldt (Merrick/Calhoun) each recorded one goal and one assist, junior Greg Wright (Irondequoit/West Irondequoit) contributed four assists and three other players chipped in with one goal. Freshman goalie Scott Tota (Webster/Webster Schroeder) made his first career start, stopping five shots in the first half. Sophomore Mike Kaminski (Sayville) made two saves in 11:47, and junior Kyle Gaebel (Deferiet/Carthage) turned aside two shots in 18:13.

Four different players scored a goal for the host Red Dragons (1-7, 0-1) -- Jim van de Veerdonk, Mike Salerno, Pat Tierney and John Young. Blair Hanson collected two assists. Chris Miles started in the cage, making 12 saves in 44:03. Sean Reynolds registered three saves in 15:40, and Ryan Guay did not stop a shot in 17 seconds of action.

After opening up a 4-1 lead after the first quarter, Cortland seized control of the game by outscoring Oneonta, 6-0, in the second quarter for a commanding 10-1 lead at the half. The visiting Red Dragons then held a 7-2 advantage in the third quarter and a 5-1 edge in the fourth quarter for the 22-4 final.
