Cook and Abbott Lead #4 Cortland to 15-2 Win vs. Fredonia St.

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Freshman Ashley Cook (Commack) scored five first-half goals and junior Lindsay Abbott (South Onondaga/Onondaga Central) recorded a game-high eight points on three goals and five assists as the nationally fourth-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team defeated Fredonia St., 15-2, Saturday afternoon in SUNYAC action.

Sophomore Maria Di Fato (Camillus/West Genesee) contributed three goals and two assists for the Red Dragons (14-1 overall, 6-0 SUNYAC). Junior Jordan Miller (Liverpool) scored twice, sophomore Gina Campese (East Syracuse/East Syracuse-Minoa) had one goal and one assist, senior Antonia Cianfrocco (Chittenango) tallied her first career goal and sophomore Mary Hartzheim (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius) and Cook chipped in with one assist apiece. Sophomore Ally Levy (Reisterstown, MD/Seton Keough) started in goal and made five saves in 50 minutes, 38 seconds before giving way to sophomore Shauna Hutchinson (Islip Terrace/East Islip), who stopped two shots in 9:22.

Sophomore Cortney Ciaschi (Ithaca) and freshman Marissa Cussins (Corning/Corning West) each scored a goal for the Blue Devils (10-5, 3-4). Sophomore goalie Casey Chiesa (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) registered seven saves.

Cortland started quickly in the game, grabbing a 4-0 lead 5:31 into the opening half, with Cook scoring three times and Abbott netting a goal. The Red Dragons extended their lead to 8-0 at the 8:51 mark as Di Fato and Abbott scored goals 61 seconds apart and Cook netted her fourth and fifth goals of the game. Ciaschi ended the run with a free-position goal at 7:08, and Cortland took an 8-1 lead into the half.

The Red Dragons put the game away with a 6-0 run in the second half to build a 14-1 lead at the 9:54 mark. Di Fato scored twice during the streak and Cianfrocco notched her first career goal on an unassisted effort at 11:35. Cussins scored Fredonia St.'s second goal of the game at 2:29, and Miller finished off the scoring off an assist from Di Fato with 12 seconds remaining.
