Red Dragons Defeat Keene St. in NCAA First Round; Earn Right to Host Four-Team Regional this Weekend

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Twelve different players scored goals as the nationally fourth-ranked women's lacrosse team defeated Keene State College, 21-3, in the first round of the NCAA Div. III playoffs Wednesday afternoon at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex. The Red Dragons improved to 19-1, tying the school record for wins in a season, and will host a four-team regional on Saturday and Sunday with the winner advancing to the "final four" hosted by Adelphi University. The Owls' season ended at 13-6.

Sophomore Maria Di Fato (Camillus/West Genesee) scored four goals and added two assists for Cortland. Junior Lindsay Abbott (South Onondaga/Onondaga Central) led all scorers with seven points on three goals and four assists. Sophomores Gina Campese (East Syracuse/East Syracuse-Minoa) and Taylor Harney (Patchogue/Patchogue-Medford) each recorded two goals and two assists, freshman Ashley Cook (Commack) had two goals and one assist, freshman Taylor Robinson (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius) scored twice and senior Antonia Cianfrocco (Chittenango) and sophomore Mary Hartzheim (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius) registered one goal and one assist apiece. Sophomore goalies Ally Levy (Reisterstown, MD/Seton Keough) and Shauna Hutchinson (Islip Terrace/East Islip) split time in the cage. Levy made four saves in the first half and Hutchinson did not stop a shot in the final 30 minutes.

Senior Jamie Albert (Southington, CT), junior Caitlyn Corace (Mahopac) and sophomore Nicole Curry (Hampstead, NH/Pinkerton Academy) each scored a goal for the Owls with senior Emily Persano (Somers, CT) collecting an assist. Freshman goalie Erin Taylor (Brewster) turned aside eight shots.

Di Fato gave the Red Dragons a 2-0 lead with goals at 29 minutes, 16 seconds and 27:35. Abbott then assisted Cook's goal at 23:53, and Albert put the Owls on the scoreboard at 21:30 with a free-position goal to make it a 3-1 game. Cortland answered by ending the half with 11 straight goals for a 14-1 lead at intermission. Abbott tallied three goals and Di Fato scored twice during the run.

Cook made it 15-1 just 37 seconds into the second half, and Kollar extended the lead to 16-1 at the 23:50 mark. Persano set up Curry's goal at 20:39 to end Cortland's 13-goal streak. Campese and Corace then traded scores before the Red Dragons ended the game with the last four goals for the 21-3 final.
