Cortland Places 13 on All-SUNYAC Men's Lacrosse Team; Slavik Named Rookie of the Year

Thirteen members of the SUNY Cortland men's lacrosse team have been selected to the 2011 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Men's Lacrosse all-conference team by the league's coaches. In addition, freshman midfielder Joe Slavik (Binghamton/Seton Catholic) has been named the SUNYAC Rookie of the Year.

Slavik was one of seven Red Dragons who earned first-team All-SUNYAC honors along with senior attacker Jay DiStefano (Huntington/Harborfields), senior midfielder Chris DeLuca (Sayville), junior long-stick defender Jack Kennedy (Camillus/West Genesee), senior short-stick midfielder Eric Parah (Baldwinsville/C.W Baker), senior defenseman Justin Schneidman (Katonah/John Jay-Cross River) and senior defenseman Shane Crossett (Camillus/West Genesee).

Five Cortland players – junior attacker Mike Tota (Webster/Webster Schroeder), senior midfielder Neal Hopps (Akwesasne/Massena), sophomore long-stick midfielder Sean Davern (Irondequoit), freshman defender Brian Winterfeldt (Merrick/Calhoun) and freshman goalie Scott Tota (Webster/Webster Schroeder) – were second-team All-SUNYAC selections. Junior attacker Greg Wright (Irondequoit) was honorable mention all-conference.

Entering NCAA tournament play, Slavik has 31 goals and 12 assists for 43 points. He ranks second on the team in goals and fourth in total points. DiStefano is third on the team with 48 points on 27 goals and 21 assists. DeLuca has recorded 24 goals and 15 assists for 39 points in 17 games. He has won 75 percent of his faceoffs (96-of-128).

Mike Tota leads Cortland with 38 goals and is tied for the team lead with 49 points through 17 games. He's second on the team with four game-winning goals. Wright is tied with Tota for the team lead with 49 points on 17 goals and a team-best 32 assists. Hopps has scored 13 goals and has recorded 15 asssits for 28 points.

Kennedy, Parah, Schneidman, Crossett, Davern and Winterfeldt have all helped Cortland boast one of the nation's top defenses. Cortland ranks second nationally in Div. III in scoring defense at 4.47 goals per game. The Red Dragons have allowed four goals or less in 10 of 17 games. In addition, Winterfeldt has five goals and five assists, Parah has five goals and three assists and Davern has two goals and one assist.

Scott Tota is 11-0 since taking over the starting goaltender duties seven games into the season. He has a 3.87 goals against average and .673 save percentage.

Cortland (15-2) will host Stevens Institute of Technology in an NCAA second-round game Saturday at 6 p.m. The Red Dragons earned a first-round bye in the tournament.
