CORTLAND, N.Y. – Sophomore
Mary Hartzheim (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius) scored a career-high seven points on three goals and four assists to lead the nationally fourth-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team to a 23-8 win versus Geneseo Friday afternoon in the SUNYAC Tournament Semifinals. The Red Dragons improved to 17-1 with the victory and will play in their 13th consecutive tournament title game versus third-seeded Brockport, a 16-6 winner over Buffalo St. in the second semifinal. The Knights fell to 12-4 with the setback.
Junior
Erin Kollar (East Islip) netted a career-high five goals, and sophomore
Maria Di Fato (Camillus/West Genesee) scored five goals and recorded four caused turnovers for Cortland. Freshman
Taylor Reh (Miller Place) netted a career-best three goals, junior
Lindsay Abbott (South Onondaga/Onondaga Central) had two goals and three assists and freshman
Ashley Cook (Commack) contributed two goals and two assists. Abbott also registered a game-high six draw controls.
Sophomore Taylor Harney (Patchogue/Patchogue-Medford) and freshmen
Heather Casey (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) and
Taylor Robinson (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius) each scored once and junior
Jordan Miller (Liverpool) chipped in with two assists for the Red Dragons. Sophomore goalie
Ally Levy (Reisterstown, MD/Seton Keough) made four saves in 52 minutes, 35 seconds before giving way to sophomore
Shauna Hutchinson (Islip Terrace/East Islip), who stopped one shot in the final 7:25.
Sophomore Rachel Petrone (Rochester/Penfield) paced the Geneseo offense with three goals. Sophomore Lea Paris (Henrietta/Rush-Henrietta) and freshman Emily Haggerty (Syracuse/Westhill) notched two goals apiece, senior Casie Damore (Brightwaters/Bay Shore) scored once and freshman Caroline Buonocore (Syracuse/Westhill) recorded an assist. Senior goalie Annie Smith (Rochester/Penfield) maade three saves in 38:41, and sophomore Julie Bernatzky (Mt. Sinai) turned aside four shots in 21:19.
After trailing 3-2 at the 15:02 mark of the opening half, the Red Dragons outscored the Knights, 12-3, to close the half with a 14-6 lead. Cortland put together two four-goal runs and ended the half with a three-goal spree capped by Di Fato's fourth of the game just as time expired. Hartzheim picked up two goals and all four of her assists in the opening half, and Kollar netted four of her five goals.
The Red Dragons stretched their lead to 19-6 with the first five goals of the second half as five different players found the cage. Petrone stopped the run with her third of the game at 7:56, but Cortland tallied four of the last five goals for the final of 23-8.
