Cortland Men's Lacrosse Receives NCAA First-Round Bye; Red Dragons to Host Stevens Inst. or Montclair May 14

The SUNY Cortland men's lacrosse team has received a bye into the second round of the 2011 NCAA Division III tournament and will host either Stevens Institute (N.J.) or Montclair St. University (N.J.) on Saturday, May 14, at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex. Game time is to be announced. Stevens is hosting Montclair in a first-round game on Wednesday.

The winner of Saturday's game advances to the national quarterfinals on Wednesday, May 18, and will face either Nazareth College, Union College or defending national champion Tufts University (Mass.) at a site to be announced. Nazareth hosts Union in the opening round Wednesday, with that winner traveling to Tufts on Saturday for the second round.

The national semifinals will also be held on campus sites on Sunday, May 22. The Division III national championship game is Sunday, May 29, at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.

Cortland (15-2), under fifth-year head coach Steve Beville, is making its 11th straight NCAA tournament appearance and 27th overall, including 20 on the Division III level. The Red Dragons lost in the national semifinals last season to eventual champion Tufts (Mass.) and played in the national title game four straight years from 2006-09. Cortland won national titles in 2006 and 2009 and placed second in 2007 and 2008.

Cortland earned its NCAA berth this season by winning its fourth straight State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) tournament title, 16-3 versus Potsdam, this past Saturday.
