Joe Slavik Chosen as ECAC Upstate New York Rookie of the Year

Freshman Joe Slavik
SUNY Cortland freshman midfielder Joe Slavik (Binghamton/Seton Catholic) has been chosen as the 2011 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Upstate New York Rookie of the Year. Four Cortland players – senior attackman Jay DiStefano (Huntington/Harborfields), senior midfielder Chris DeLuca (Sayville), senior defender Justin Schneidman (Katonah/John Jay-Cross River) and senior defender Shane Crossett (Camillus/West Genesee) – were chosen to the All-ECAC Upstate New York first team.

Slavik finished the season with 31 goals and 14 assists for 45 points. He ranked second among Red Dragon players in goals and fourth in total points. A starter in nine of his 19 games, Slavik scored six game-winning goals and registered 21 ground balls.

DiStefano, a starter in all 19 games, led Cortland with 57 points and was second with both 35 goals and 22 assists. He scored three game-winning goals and grabbed 25 ground balls. DiStefano was an honorable mention All-America as a junior in 2010.

DeLuca finished with 27 goals and 17 assists for 44 points in 19 games. He won 72.2 percent of his faceoffs (114-of-158) and led the Red Dragons with 61 ground balls. DeLuca is an All-American for the third straight year, including first-team honors as both a junior and senior.

Schneidman and Crossett played key roles for a Cortland defensive unit that allowed only 4.68 goals per game. The Red Dragons gave up three or less goals in a game eight times. Schneidman recorded 26 ground balls and a team-high 31 caused turnovers in 18 games. Crossett, a starter in 16 of his 19 games, finished with 19 ground balls and nine caused turnovers.

Cortland finished the season with a 16-3 record, won their fourth straight State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) title and tied for fifth nationally after reaching the NCAA Division III quarterfinals. The Red Dragons have qualified for the NCAA playoffs each of the last 11 years and have advanced to at least the quarterfinals 10 straight seasons.
