ITHACA, N.Y. – Sophomore Brian Bistis (Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central) and senior Carl Korpi (Miller Place) finished second in their respective weight classes and were two of six Cortland all-state wrestlers at the two-day New York State Collegiate Championships, hosted by Cornell University.

Cortland finished sixth out of 15 schools in the final team standings and was the top Division III school. Army won the title with 162.5 points, followed by Cornell (144.5), Columbia (135), University at Buffalo (117), Nassau Community College (102), Cortland (84.5), Hunter (63) and Ithaca (62.5) in the top eight.

Korpi finished second at 184 pounds and Bistis placed second at 141 pounds, both with 3-1 records. Also earning all-state honors with top-eight finishes were junior Jonathan Conroy (South Plainfield, NJ) in third place at 165 pounds, junior Troy Sterling (Uniondale) in fourth place at 157 pounds, freshman Lou Puca (Huntington) in sixth place at 174 pounds and junior Andre Berry (Uniondale) in eighth place at 149 pounds.

Korpi, an all-state wrestler for the second straight year, entered as the top seed at 184 pounds. He opened with a 9-1 major decision and a pin in 2:49. He won 4-0 in the semifinals versus Dan Sutherland of Nassau before losing to second seed Michael Gorman of Army in the finals, 7-2.

Bistis, the second seed at 141 pounds, earned 8-2 and 7-0 decisions in his first two matches Saturday. He knocked off third-seeded Sean Messina of Hunter in Sunday's semifinals, 9-3, but lost by pin in the finals to top-seeded and eventual Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Meet Kevin Smith of the University at Buffalo.

Conroy posted a 5-1 record as the fifth seed at 165 pounds. He lost to the fourth seed in the second round, but rebounded to win four straight matches in the wrestlebacks, capped by a 7-4 decision over seventh-seeded Tory Cain of RIT in the third-place match. Sterling, the second seed at 157 pounds, won two major decisions on Saturday, 12-3 and 11-0. He lost a 3-1 overtime decision to Army's Chandler Smith in the semifinals, then won a 16-4 major decision in his first consolation match. Sterling medically forfeited the third-place match.

Puca, seeded fifth at 174 pounds, pinned his first opponent but was pinned by the fourth seed in the second round. Puca won his next two matches, one by pin, but lost his final two bouts. Berry, the fifth seed at 149 pounds, finished with a 2-1 record before medically forfeiting his last two matches, including the seventh-place match.

Cortland's best finisher in the non-championship “B” bracket was freshman Paul Fields (Clarkstown/Clarkstown North), who went 2-1 to finish second at 125 pounds. Freshman Mike McGrath (Kingston) finished third at 184 pounds with a 4-1 record.
