Zappia OT Game-Winning Goal Completes Comeback at Brockport, 6-5

Freshman Nick Zappia scored twice, including the game-winner in OT
BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Freshman Nick Zappia (Manlius/Kingston Voyageurs) scored two goals, including the power-play game-winner 1:20 into overtime, as Cortland rallied from a 5-2 deficit to defeat host Brockport, 6-5, in a SUNYAC contest.

The Red Dragons and Golden Eagles are now tied for seventh place in the SUNYAC standings with seven points apiece, one point behind Potsdam and Geneseo. Cortland is 3-6-1 in the league and 5-13-1 overall. Brockport falls to 3-7-1 in the SUNYAC and 7-11-2 overall.

Senior Jake Saville (Bellingham, WA/Marquette Rangers), junior Michael Lysyj (Hillsborough, NJ/South Shore Kings), senior Joey Christiano (Rochester/Port Hope Predators) and sophomore Stephen Nardi (Plainedge/NY Bobcats) scored one goal apiece.

Junior goalie Brittan Kuhlman (Elkhorn, NE/Winnipeg Saints) made a career-high 46 saves. He stopped all 13 shots that he faced in the third period.

Chris Cangro and James Cody scored two goals each and Chris Marinakos tallied once for Brockport. Aaron Green made 32 saves as the Golden Eagles outshot the Red Dragons, 51-38.

Brockport led 5-2 after Cody's second goal of the game and 15th of the season with 6:17 left in the second period. Christiano closed the gap to 5-3 on a shorthanded goal, assisted by junior Adam Bevilacqua (Toronto, ON/St. Norbert College), just 34 seconds later. Zappia scored with 2:35 left in the period off a Mike Henrici (North Haven, CT/Manhattanville College) assist and Cortland trailed 5-4 entering the third period.

The Red Dragons quickly tied the game on a Saville power-play goal, set up by Peter Lompado (Staten Island/Minnesota St.-Mankato), 55 seconds into the third period. Brockport was whistled for a hooking penalty with 37 seconds left in regulation to give Cortland a power play that carried over into overtime and set the stage for Zappia's game-winning goal assisted by senior Ryan Durocher (Canton/Boston Bulldogs).

Brockport grabbed a 2-0 lead on goals by Cody and Marinakos. Cody's goal came with Brockport holding a two-skater advantage. Cortland answered with a Lysyj unassisted goal with 3:35 left in the first and Nardi's goal 2:12 into the second to tie the game at 2-2. The Golden Eagles exploded for three goals in the next 12 minutes, the first two by Cangro.

Cortland will play at Geneseo Saturday at 7 p.m.
