CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Cortland women's ice hockey team scored two early first-period goals and held on for a 2-1 win versus ECAC West foe Chatham Friday night at Alumni Arena. The Red Dragons improved to 3-11-1 overall and 1-9-1 in the conference, while the Cougars fell to 0-11 both overall and in league play.

Junior Kellie Micillo (Sayville/Suffolk PAL) led Cortland with a goal and an assist, and sophomore Charlotte Carter (El Segundo, CA/L.A. Selects) netted a goal. Junior Chelsey Wright (Medford/Suffolk PAL), sophomore Gina Tomei (Bronx/Sound Shore Warriors) and freshman Chelsie Hausberger (Buffalo/Buffalo Bisons) each recorded an assist. Senior goalie Katie Double (Farmington/Victor H.S.) made 21 saves.

Senior Sara Forbes (St. Albert, AB/St. Albert Slash) scored Chatham's goal with sophomore Morgan Becer (Ligonier, PA/Team Pittsburgh) collecting an assist. Freshman goalie Megan Buchanan (Ottawa, ON/Rideau St. Lawrence) turned aside 33 shots.

Micillo gave the Red Dragons the lead two minutes, thirty-four seconds into the game when she knocked a rebound in front through Buchanan's pads. Carter made it a 2-0 game with a one-time shot on the right side of the slot at 6:15. Forbes pulled the Cougars to within 2-1 at the 8:39 mark of the opening period when she beat Double one-on-one after a long rush.

In the second period, Chatham could not capitalize on four power-play chances, while the Red Dragons had one opportunity. Early in the third period, Cortland had 39 seconds of a two-player advantage but couldn't get the puck past Buchanan. Minutes later, Cortland killed off Chatham's sixth power-play attempt of the night and denied the Cougars on their seventh attempt with less than eight minutes remaining. Chatham pulled Buchanan for an extra skater with 15 seconds remaining but could not score the equalizer.

The two teams meet again on Saturday at 2 p.m.
