BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Cortland women's tennis team defeated Fredonia St, 7-2, Saturday afternoon at the SUNYAC Championships. The Red Dragons improved to 5-6 with the win and advanced to face Brockport in the fifth-place match Sunday at 10 a.m. The Blue Devils dropped to 7-5 with the loss.
Cortland won 5-of-6 singles matches and 2-of-3 doubles matches. In doubles play, senior
Loraine Jelinek (Smithtown/Home School) and sophomore
Jean Martinez (Homer) earned an 8-2 win in the first flight. Freshmen
Shannon Grodotzke (Rocky Point) and
Dilara Kumbul (Greece/Greece Athena) teamed up to win 8-0 at second doubles. In third doubles, Fredonia's Jess Johnston and Stephanie Thompson registered an 8-2 victory.
Jelinek recorded a win at first singles, taking the first set, 6-0, and collecting the victory when her opponent retired. Martinez earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at second singles. The tightest match occurred at third singles. Grodotzke recorded the victory over Jess Johnston, winning the first set, 6-1, dropping the second set, 7-5, and earning the win by virtue of taking the super tiebreaker, 10-4.
Freshman
Janette O'Keefe (Cornwall) picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win at fourth singles. Kumbul recorded Cortland's final singles win, 6-3, 6-4, in the fifth flight. Stephanie Thompson earned the Blue Devils' win at sixth singles, 6-0, 6-0.
