BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – Brockport won a pair of tight doubles matches and split six singles bouts as the Golden Eagles nipped Cortland, 5-4, in the SUNYAC Tournament fifth-place match at the Binghamton Tennis Center. Cortland concludes the fall season with a 5-7 dual-match record. Geneseo won the league title with a 5-0 win over New Paltz in the finals. Oneonta beat Plattsburgh, 5-2, for third place and Fredonia defeated Oswego, 5-2, for seventh place.

Cortland senior Loraine Jelinek (Smithtown/Home School) and junior Jean Martinez (Homer) posted an 8-5 victory at first doubles. Brockport, however, won the other two doubles flights by identical 9-7 scores. Mackenzie Rounds and Amy Kurmis defeated Cortland freshmen Shannon Grodotzke (Rocky Point) and Dilara Kumbul (Greece/Greece Athena) at second doubles and Nicole DeRose and Lauren Bohman won at third doubles over freshman Mary Claire Kopcienski (Brockport) and Kristen Snelders (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue).

Jelinek and Martinez each won in straight sets at first and second singles, respectively. Jelinek cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win and Martinez won 6-3, 6-3. Cortland's other victory was by freshman Janette O'Keefe (Cornwall) at fourth singles. She won the first set, 6-3, and lost the second set, 6-3, before winning a super-tiebreaker to 10 points, 10-3, in place of a third set.

Brockport's Katelyn Richenberg won 6-3, 6-3 at third singles and DeRose won 6-4, 6-3 at sixth singles. At fifth singles, Bohman lost the first set to Kumbul, 7-5, but won the second set, 6-4. She then fought off a match point in the super-tiebreaker and eventually won, 11-9, to claim the victory.
