Cortland Handed 73-62 Loss at New Paltz Despite Cohen's 23 Points

Lindsey Minor scored a career-high 11 points
NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Alex McCullough led five New Paltz double-figure scorers with 18 points as the Hawks defeated visiting Cortland, 73-62. New Paltz improved to 14-8 overall and is third in the SUNYAC with a 12-3 mark. Cortland's five-game winning streak was snapped with the loss. The Red Dragons are fourth in the league at 8-6 and are 13-8 overall.

Senior Brittany Cohen (Fayetteville/Jamesville-DeWitt) led Cortland with 23 points and seven assists. She made 11-of-12 free-throw attempts. Freshman Lindsey Minor (Wheatley Heights/St. John the Baptist) scored a career-high 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor and senior Molly Byrne (Syracuse/Bishop Ludden) led the team with six rebounds and three steals.

McCullough scored 14 of her 18 points in the second half as the Hawks erased a 29-25 halftime deficit. Maliqua Fisher scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds and Zoe Cohen made 3-of-4 three-pointers in a 12-point effort. Caitlin Irwin added 11 points and a team-best seven assists and Shanay Bradley totaled 11 points and eight assists.

Cortland scored eight straight points in the final 3:05 of the first half to turn a 25-21 deficit into a four-point lead. The Red Dragons trailed by two at 35-33 after a Brittany Cohen layup with 15:52 remaining.

New Paltz went on a 15-4 run over the next four minutes, capped by a McCullough layup, and led 50-37 with 11:55 left. Cortland responded by scoring nine of the next 11 points, four by Minor, and was within six at 52-46 with 8:44 on the clock.

Fisher made a layup with 7:39 left, Irwin buried a three-pointer about a minute later and Bradley hit a shot with 6:07 remaining to give New Paltz a 59-46 lead. The Hawks led by as many as 15 points before one final Cortland push cut the score to 63-55 with 1:18 left. McCullough made six straight foul shots over the Hawks' next three possessions to seal the victory.

Cortland will travel to league leader Oneonta on Saturday for a 2 p.m. contest.
