OSWEGO, N.Y. - The Cortland wrestling team, ranked 13th nationally in Division III, tied a school record with its 17th dual-match victory of the season as the Red Dragons downed host Oswego, 31-6.
Cortland, now 17-2, won eight of the night's 10 matches, including two by pin and one by major decision. The Red Dragons' 17 wins ties the school record set in 1995-96 during a 17-3 season. Cortland will complete its dual-match season at fifth-ranked Ithaca next Wednesday, Feb. 15.
Cortland opened the night with a 3-0 win by freshman
Paul Fields (Clarkstown/Clarkstown North) at 125 pounds, but Oswego (2-10) tied the score when Omar Santiago posted a 7-3 win at 133 pounds.
At 141 pounds, freshman
Edwin Perry (Riverhead) recorded a takedown with 10 seconds left in regulation to force overtime, then won the match with another takedown about 30 seconds into the first sudden-victory period. Perry improved to 11-5 with the win.
Cortland extended its lead to 10-3 on junior
Andre Berry's (Uniondale) 12-3 major decision at 149 pounds. The win increased Berry's record to 15-7 this winter. Oswego closed to within 10-6 on a 5-3 decision by Nick Rodgers at 157 pounds.
Cortland won the final five bouts of the match. Junior
Jonathan Conroy (South Plainfield, NJ) started the run with a pin in just 1:36 at 165 pounds for his team-high 29th win of the season. Sophomore
James Ondris (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) followed with a 9-4 decision at 174 pounds and improved to 14-10.
At 184 pounds, senior
Carl Korpi (Miller Place) earned a 4-2 win in the second sudden-victory overtime period over Cameron Mills. Korpi registered an escape, then scored with a second remaining on a Mills technical violation. Mills, however, earned a point for riding time to tie the match at 2-2. Neither wrestler scored in the first sudden-victory overtime period or a pair of 30-second tiebreaker periods. Korpi won the match with a takedown in the second sudden-victory session and is 24-6 on the season.
