Senior Lindsay Abbott's 201 career goals are the second-highest total in school history
CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior midfielder
Lindsay Abbott (South Onondaga/Onondaga Central) scored six goals and became the second player in school history to reach the career 200-goal mark as nationally third-ranked Cortland defeated St. Lawrence, 18-6.
Abbott has now scored 201 goals in her four-year Red Dragon career. Jeanna Angotti holds the school record with 211 goals from 1999-2002.
Freshman
Marilyn Farrell (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) finished with three goals and two assists and senior
Erin Kollar (East Islip) had three goals and one assist for Cortland (4-1). Junior
Maria Di Fato (Camillus/West Genesee) added two goals and four assists and junior
Gina Campese (East Syracuse/East Syracuse-Minoa) recorded a goal and two assists.
Junior
Shauna Hutchinson (Islip Terrace/East Islip) made six saves, three in each half, in 55 minutes, 30 seconds between the pipes for the Red Dragons. Sophomore
Courtney Morgan (Locust Valley) played the final 4:30 in goal and allowed one goal with no saves.
St. Lawrence (2-2) was led by Alanna Piroli's (Black River/Carthage) two goals. Hanne Bailey (Jordan/Jordan-Elbridge) added a goal and an assist and Paige Powell (Wilton, CT) made 16 saves.
Cortland raced out to a 10-0 lead in the game's first 15:20. Abbott and Kollar each scored three times during that stretch. The Saints tallied the next three goals to cut the score to 10-3 with 6:35 left in the half, but Abbott scored the final two goals of the half, including her 200th career goal with 1:30 remaining, and Cortland led 12-3 at halftime.
Abbott also tallied Cortland's first goal of the second half to start a 4-1 run for the Red Dragons. The teams each scored twice in the final five minutes to complete the scoring.
Cortland outshot St. Lawrence, 47-16, and won 14 of the game's 26 draw controls. Junior
Natalie Melaniff (Wantagh) won six draw controls and junior
Taylor Harney (Patchogue/Patchogue-Medford) finished with a goal, an assist and three draw controls. Farrell led the team with seven ground balls and sophomore
Jessica Lavelle (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) caused three turnovers.
For St. Lawrence, Bailey won four draw controls and Soeurette Morley (Ridgewood, NJ) won three draws.
Cortland will host Ithaca College on Saturday, March 24, at 1 p.m. St. Lawrence will play at Potsdam on Wednesday, March 28, at 4 p.m.
