Defense Tightens After Early Deficit in 15-8 Victory vs. Geneseo

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland held Geneseo scoreless for a span of more than 24 minutes from the end of the first quarter until midway through the third quarter to turn a 4-3 deficit into a 9-4 lead and the nationally second-ranked Red Dragons remained unbeaten with a 15-8 victory over the visiting Knights.

Cortland improved to 11-0 overall and 3-0 in the SUNYAC. Geneseo, now 0-7 overall and 0-1 in the league, suffered its largest margin of defeat this spring. Five of the Knights' seven losses have been one-goal setbacks.

Sophomore midfielder Joe Slavik (Binghamton/Seton Catholic) led Cortland with four goals and senior attack Mike Tota (Webster/Webster Schroeder) scored three times. Sophomore attack Cody Consul (Webster/Webster Schroeder) finished with two goals, two assists and six ground balls.

Senior attack Greg Wright (Irondequoit/West Irondequoit) added two goals and one assist and freshman attack Matt Rakoczy (Clifton Park/Albany Academy) scored twice. Junior midfielder Nick Jarvis (Syracuse/Onondaga Central) won 13-of-25 faceoffs and grabbed six ground balls. Junior goalie Mike Kaminski (Sayville) finished with seven saves.

For Geneseo, John Wettack (Mercer Island, WA) scored three times and Steven Cregan (Rochester/Brighton) had two goals and one assist. Michael Greubel (North Merrick/Mepham) made 10 saves and allowed 14 goals in 57:36 between the pipes.

Slavik scored 50 seconds into the game to give Cortland a quick lead, but Geneseo answered with goals by Cregan, Brendan Kurpis (Yorktown) and Jeff Watson (Camillus/Marcellus) to take a 3-1 lead with 6:29 left in the first quarter. The Red Dragons knotted the game at 3-3 on scores by sophomore midfielder Doug Meehan (Sayville) and Slavik, but Wettack's second goal of the game with 2:01 remaining gave Geneseo a 4-3 lead.

Cortland outscored Geneseo 3-0 in the second quarter on tallies by Rakoczy, Tota and Slavik, and recorded the first three goals of the third quarter, two by Consul, to take a 9-4 lead. Geneseo ended its drought with goals by Greg Harris (Huntington Station/Walt Whitman) and Cregan at the 7:53 and 7:10 marks, respectively, to close within 9-6, but Tota and Rakoczy scored in the final six minutes of the period to put the Red Dragons up 11-6. Cortland's advantage was at least five goals the entire fourth quarter.

Cortland will travel to Brockport for a SUNYAC contest Saturday at 1 p.m.
