Abbott Surpasses 400 Career Points in 22-1 Win vs. Potsdam

Senior Lindsay Abbott eclipsed 400 career points with four goals and three assists
CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior Lindsay Abbott (South Onondaga/Onondaga Central) scored seven points on four goals and three assists and became the first player in Cortland history to surpass 400 career points as the nationally second-ranked Red Dragons defeated Potsdam, 22-1, in SUNYAC women's lacrosse action Tuesday afternoon at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex. Abbott, who improved her career numbers to 401 points on 235 goals and 166 assists, is now one of just five players to reach the 400-point milestone in NCAA Div. III history. Abbott became the fourth player to hit 400 points in the first half and was quickly joined on the short list by Buffalo St. senior Karen Shaddock, who recorded her 400th career point with an assist late in the first half in an eventual 17-11 win versus Geneseo. A former Curry College player is the all-time leader with 500 points.

Junior Maria Di Fato (Camillus/West Genesee) led Cortland (12-1, 5-0 SUNYAC) with five goals and added an assist. Senior Erin Kollar (East Islip) contributed three goals and three assists, junior Taylor Harney (Patchogue/Patchogue-Medford) had two goals and one assist and junior Mary Hartzheim (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius) and sophomores Taylor Reh (Miller Place) and Taylor Robinson (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius) each scored twice.

Di Fato and sophomore Jessica Lavelle (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) recorded game highs of four caused turnovers each. Junior Natalie Melaniff (Wantagh) collected a game-high six draw controls, while Lavelle and freshman Chelsea Martin (Ogdensburg/Ogdensburg Free Academy) scooped up three ground balls apiece. Junior Shauna Hutchinson (Islip Terrace/East Islip) stopped one shot in 47 minutes, 28 seconds before giving way to sophomore Courtney Morgan (Locust Valley), who did not face a shot over the final 12:32.

Freshman Maragret Wall (Rochester/Aquinas) netted the goal for the Bears (4-9, 1-5 SUNYAC) with freshman Denise Johns (Syracuse/Marcellus) assisting on the score. Senior goalie Kaci Milligan (Liverpool/Bishop Ludden) stopped three shots in 34:32, and sophomore Jen Chmiel (Rochester/Eastridge) turned aside four shots in 25:28. Junior Brittany Coffey (Canton/Hugh C. Williams) registered three caused turnovers and two ground balls.

Abbott and Edward opened the scoring for Cortland, and after Wall made it a 2-1 game at the 24:52 mark of the first half, the Red Dragons closed out the opening 30 minutes with 13 straight goals. Abbott and Di Fato each scored three times during the outburst with Abbott recording her 400th point on her fourth goal of the game at 12:56. Kollar completed the streak when she scored just before the horn. The Red Dragons, who held the Bears without a shot in the second half, outscored Potsdam, 7-0, over the final 30 minutes for the 22-1 final.

The Red Dragons close their regular season with three straight road conference games.
