Beville Earns 100th Red Dragon Victory in Cortland's 10-3 Win at Oswego

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Eight different players scored goals as the nationally second-ranked Cortland men's lacrosse team defeated Oswego, 10-3, Wednesday afternoon in SUNYAC action to hand sixth-year head coach Steve Beville his 100th career win as a Red Dragon. Beville, who owns an overall career record of 248-127 that includes stints at Colorado College and Division I Vermont, improved his Cortland mark to 100-16. He became the Red Dragons' all-time wins leader earlier this season, passing Chuck Winters who recorded a 94-55 record in 11 seasons.

The Red Dragons improved on their best start in school history by going to 15-0 on the season and secured the top seed in the four-team SUNYAC Tournament with their 5-0 record. The Lakers dropped to 8-6 and 1-5.

Senior Greg Wright (Irondequoit/West Irondequoit) led Cortland with four points on two goals and two assists and recorded a game-high five ground balls. Sophomore Cody Consul (Webster/Webster Schroeder) had two goals and an assist, and sophomore Joe Slavik (Binghamton/Seton Catholic) tallied one goal and two assists. Seniors Matt Hoey (Auburn) and Mike Tota (Webster/Webster Schroeder), junior Taylor Mendoza (Greensboro, NC/Western Guilford), sophomore Brian Winterfeldt (Merrick/Calhoun) and freshman Matt Rakoczy (Clifton Park/Albany Academy) each netted one goal, while senior Zack Mulvaney (Deferiet/Carthage) and sophomore Doug Meehan (Sayville) registered two assists apiece.

Junior goalie Mike Kaminski (Sayville) ran his record to 15-0 on the season, making nine saves and allowing three goals in 52 minutes, 13 seconds. Sophomore Scott Tota (Webster/Webster Schroeder) played the final 7:47, stopping two shots. Junior Nick Jarvis (Syracuse/Onondaga Central) won 8-of-12 faceoffs and collected three ground balls. Meehan, Winterfeldt and senior Jack Kennedy (Camillus/West Genesee) also scooped up three ground balls apiece.

Casey Balzer scored twice for the Lakers, Matt Palmer netted a goal and Cody Hoose and Connor Khammar each had one assist. Ian O'Brien made 16 saves and surrendered 10 goals in 54:15. Tom Gropp turned aside one shot in 5:45. Khammar, Brian Slattery, Britt Leone and Jason Ketchoyian collected four ground balls apiece.

The teams were locked at 1-1 late in the first quarter after Winterfeldt opened the scoring at 13:30 and Balzer tied the game at 3:08. Mendoza gave Cortland the lead for good at 2:13 of the first, and the Red Dragons took control of the game by adding six more goals in a row for an 8-1 lead through three quarters.

Wright, Tota and Consul each scored in the second quarter with Consul's goal coming just five seconds before the half, and Rakoczy, Wright and Slavik found the back of the net in the third quarter. The teams split four goals in the fourth quarter for the 10-3 final.
