ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The nationally 13th-ranked Cortland women's volleyball team lost the first set in each of its two matches Friday during Day 1 of the Nazrareth College Golden Flyer Invitational, but in each instance came back to post four-set victories. The Red Dragons defeated 19th-ranked Mount Union, 23-25, 28-26, 25-20, 25-16, and beat Fredonia, 25-27, 25-19, 25-21, 25-18.
Cortland (6-0) will complete the tournament Saturday with matches versus Nazareth at 11 a.m. and Clarkson at 3 p.m. Nazareth is also 2-0 in the tournament thus far after earning five-set victories over Fredonia and Clarkson.
Junior
Aubrey Barrett (Liverpool) led Cortland versus Mt. Union with 17 kills and also totaled 18 digs. Senior
Ashley Coyle (Mt. Hope/Minisink Valley) and senior
Natalie Zacpal (Islip) finished with 11 kills each. Coyle also had 18 digs and three aces, while Zacpal put down four blocks.
Junior
Ava Hintz (East Aurora) added 10 kills and four aces and junior
Krissy Silk (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) registered 20 digs from her libero position. Senior
Kristen Guercio (Smithtown/Smithtown East) finished with 47 assists, more than 11 per set, and added 12 digs.
Coyle was the team leader versus Fredonia with 16 kills and 15 digs and Hintz amassed 12 kills, six blocks and two aces. Freshman
Kim Givelechian (Roslyn Heights/Herricks) tallied eight kills and 10 digs and Zacpal chipped in with six kills and four blocks. Silk rang up 14 digs and Guercio finished with 42 assists, 11 digs and two blocks.
