Cortland freshman
Bobby Dierna (Webster/Wayne) has been chosen as the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference (ECWC) Co-Rookie of the Week for the week ending Jan. 6. He shares the honor with Ithaca's Dan Glinko.
Dierna, ranked third nationally in Div. III at 149 pounds, went 2-0 at the North-South Duals last Saturday with decisions versus Merchant Marine Academy and 20th-ranked The College of New Jersey. His 13-7 win vs. Merchant Marine tied the match at 7-7 and his 9-4 win vs. TCNJ gave Cortland an early 9-4 lead. Dierna improved his season record to 18-1 with the wins. He's been honored as the conference's Rookie of the Week three times thus far.
Cortland is 9-0 in dual matches and is ranked third in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Div. III poll. The Red Dragons will compete at the NWCA/Cliff Keen Div. III National Duals in Springfield, Ill., Jan. 12-13. The 16-team tournament will feature 14 ranked teams, including the top 10 schools.
The Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference consists of Brockport, Cortland, Ithaca, Lycoming, Messiah, Oneonta, Oswego and Rochester Institute of Technology.
