#3 Cortland Defeats Oswego, 37-9, for School Record-Tying 17th Victory

Josh Reed won 8-6 at 174 pounds on a reversal with 13 seconds remaining
CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland, ranked third nationally in Div. III, tied a school record for dual-match wins in a season with a 37-9 victory over visiting Oswego. The Red Dragons are now 17-2, matching the win totals of both last year's squad and the 1995-96 team.

Cortland was originally scheduled to face Coast Guard in addition to Oswego, but that match was canceled as Coast Guard was unable to make the trip to Cortland due to the snowstorm that hit the Northeast. Cortland will complete its dual-match season at home versus Ithaca on Wednesday, Feb. 20, at 7 p.m.

The Red Dragons won three matches by pin. Senior Jonathan Conroy (South Plainfield, NJ) pinned his opponent in 3:52 at 165 pounds. Sophomore Lou Puca (Huntington), ranked fourth nationally at 174 pounds, wrestled up a weight class at 184 and recorded a pin in 55 seconds. Senior Jared Myhrberg (Queensbury), ranked first nationally at 197 pounds, pinned his foe in 4:39.

Freshman Tony Battista (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) won by a 13-5 major decision at 141 pounds. He secured the points needed for the major decision with a takedown and near fall in the final 10 seconds after leading 8-5. Sophomore Paul Fields (Clarkstown/Clarkstown North) won 7-1 at 125 pounds, freshman Alec Dierna (Webster/Webster Schroeder) was a 4-1 winner at 133 pounds and freshman Andy Scopino (Mahopac) won by forfeit at 285 pounds.

The closest match of the afternoon came at 174 pounds between Cortland freshman Josh Reed (Webster/Webster Schroeder) and Oswego's Eric Anderson. Reed took a 5-4 lead on a reversal early in the third period, but Anderson used a reversal of his own with 1:04 remaining to go up 6-5. Reed tied the match on a technical violation and scored the winning points on a reversal with 13 seconds left.
