SUNY Cortland junior quarterback
Tyler Hughes (Scranton, PA/West Scranton), senior defensive end
Joe Kirchner (Holbrook/Sachem North) and freshman cornerback
Carson Lassiter (Madison, NJ) have all been honored for their play in Cortland's 26-15 victory over visiting William Paterson University last Saturday.
Hughes has been chosen as both the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) and the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Div. III Southeast Offensive Player of the Week. Kirchner has been named the NJAC and the ECAC Div. III Southeast Defensive Player of the Week, while Lassiter has been tabbed as the NJAC Defensive Rookie of the Week.
Hughes became the first Cortland quarterback, and the 11th Red Dragon overall, to rush for at least 200 yards in a game. He finished with 203 net yards on 23 attempts (8.8 yards per carry) with two touchdowns – a 9-yard run in the first series of the game and a 49-yard scoring rush in the second quarter. He also completed seven passes for 62 yards.
Kirchner recorded nine tackles, including 3.5 of Cortland's eight sacks in the game. He finished with 4.5 total tackles for lost yardage and a quarterback hurry. One of Kirchner's sacks resulted in a fumble that Cortland recovered at its own 35-yard line early in the fourth quarter with the Red Dragons clinging to a 20-15 lead.
Lassiter registered seven tackles in the contest, with six of his tackles solo. He also recorded a pass breakup and a fourth-quarter fumble recovery.
Cortland (1-1, 1-0 NJAC) will play at St. John Fisher in a non-league game on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 4 p.m.
