CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women's gymnastics team opened the home portion of its schedule with a 189.75-181.65 dual-meet loss to Div. I Cornell University. Sophomore Marley Bender (Riverside, CA/Woodcrest Christian) tied for first place on floor exercise with a 9.70 and finished third on vault with a 9.525, both career highs. Senior Courtney Mangini (Dix Hills/Commack) placed third on floor with a 9.675 and fourth on balance beam with a 9.45.

Sophomore Meghan Goyden (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) tied for fourth place on vault (9.50), while sophomore Maddy Scozzie (Ashburn, VA/Broad Run) finished fifth on balance beam (9.375). Scozzie was also second in the all-around with a career-best score of 36.90.

Other Red Dragons in the top six of their events included freshman Courtney Von Braunsberg (West Islip) with a career-best, sixth-place score 9.40 on vault, and junior Nicole Zangoglia (Old Bridge, NJ) and sophomore Emily Nagy (Merrimack, NH), who tied for sixth on uneven bars with scores of 9.20.

For Cornell, Alicia Blair won vault (9.775), Melanie Jorgensen won uneven bars (9.80) and Lexi Schupp tied Bender for first on floor exercise (9.70). Maia Vernacchia and Jessie Starcevich tied for first on balance beam, each with a 9.55, and Schupp was the top all-arounder with a 37.35.

Cortland will compete at Springfield College next Sunday, Feb. 2, at 1 p.m.
