OSWEGO, N.Y. – The nationally fifth-ranked Cortland wrestling team won eight of its 10 matches, three by pin, in a 40-8 dual-match victory at Oswego.
Cortland improved to 12-3 with the victory. The Red Dragons will host Wesleyan University Sunday at noon. Oswego is now 3-9.
Junior
Paul Fields (New City/Clarkstown North) pinned his opponent in five minutes, 44 seconds at 125 pounds to open the competition. The Red Dragons also finished with pins by sophomore
Joe Giaramita (Elwood/John H. Glenn) in 1:10 at 197 pounds and by junior
Lance Moore (Johnson City) in 1:22 at 285 pounds. Giaramita is ranked third nationally and Moore is ranked eighth nationally at their respective weight classes.
Sophomore
Tony Battista (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) won by a technical fall at 133 pounds as he led 20-2 when the match was stopped at the 4:30 mark. Freshman
Brendan Dent (Ronkonkoma/Connetquot) earned a 14-2 major decision at 157 pounds and freshman
Colin Barber (Westfield, NJ) recorded a 15-5 major decision at 174 pounds.
Cortland's other victories were a 6-5 decision by freshman
Brian Bulger (Westfield, NJ) at 184 pounds and a forfeit win by sophomore
Joe Cataldo (Wantagh/MacArthur) at 165 pounds. In Bulger's match, he trailed 3-2 after the first period but tied it at 4-4 on a takedown with five seconds left in the second. He scored on an escape and a penalty point with 20 seconds left in the third before relinquishing a stalling point for the final margin.
Oswego earned its points on a 15-0 technical fall in 4:13 by Abubakarr Sow at 149 pounds and a 6-4 overtime decision by Quamaine Thomas at 133 pounds. Thomas trailed 4-1 in the second period but registered a two-point near fall in the third and tied the match with a riding time point. He then won the bout with a takedown 37 seconds into the first sudden-victory overtime period.
