Joe Giaramita (Elwood/John H. Glenn) and senior
Lance Moore (Johnson City) won the final two matches as nationally 28th-ranked Cortland rallied to defeat host Nassau Community College, 21-16, in a dual match.
The Red Dragons (8-3) trailed 16-12 before Giaramita pinned his opponent at 197 pounds in 6:18 to put Cortland ahead 18-16. Moore then won the decisive match at 285 pounds by a 10-4 decision. Giaramita, ranked third nationally in Div. III, improved to 21-1 with his win. Moore, ranked 10th in his weight class, is now 21-5.
Cortland opened with a 4-3 decision by sophomore
Mat Bradice (Mastic/William Floyd) at 125 pounds. Nassau won the next two bouts before freshman
Greg Chery (Ronkonkoma/Connetquot) earned a 5-2 overtime win at 149 pounds. The Lions won three of the next three matches, with Cortland's lone victory in that stretch a
Colin Barber (Westfield, NJ) forfeit win at 165 pounds.
Cortland also wrestled five matches against Sullivan County Community College that were officially designated as "exhibitions." The Red Dragons won four of them – pins by Barber at 165 and
Nick Bellanza (East Northport/John H. Glenn) at 285 and decisions by
Paul Fields (New City/Clarkstown North) at 133 and
Gino Gioielli (Brewster) at 184. Those matches do count toward individual season records, and Barber is now 31-10 with his two victories during the day.
Cortland will send competitors to the Messiah Open on Saturday, Feb. 7, and will host Oswego on Sunday, Feb. 8 at 1 p.m. The Oswego match is part of Cortland's first "Beauty and the Beast" event in which the Red Dragon wrestling and women's gymnastics teams will be competing simultaneously in Corey Gymnasium.
