Gymnasts and Wrestlers Both Win at Cortland's Inaugural "Beauty and the Beast" Event

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The SUNY Cortland women's gymnastics and wrestling teams were each victorious during the College's inaugural "Beauty and the Beast" event in which the two teams competed simultaneously at Corey Gymnasium. The gymnasts posted a season-high score in a 189.225-187.525 dual-meet victory over Div. II Southern Connecticut State, while the nationally 28th-ranked wrestlers defeated Oswego, 43-3.

WOMEN'S GYMNASTICS

Cortland's team score of 189.225 is the fourth-best in school history. The Red Dragons outscored the Owls by more than a point on uneven bars (47.10-45.775) and by nearly a point on balance beam (47.125-46.15) to offset three-tenth of a point advantages by the guests on vault and floor.

Senior Elise Konikoff (Hamburg) won both vault with a 9.65 and balance beam with a 9.70. Sophomore Amanda Scanlon (Glastonbury, CT) was the lone all-arounder in her first career attempt at a four-event meet. She posted a score of 38.00 that featured a second-place score on balance beam  (9.65), a fourth-place effort on floor exercise (9.625) and a fifth-place score on vault (career-best 9.525).

Sophomore Meghan Cobb (Hobe Sound, FL/Clark Advanced Learning Ctr.) won uneven bars with a career-high 9.625 and senior Allie Osmundsen (Hicksville) finished second on floor with a 9.70. Senior Nicole Zangoglia (Old Bridge, NJ) tied for third on uneven bars (9.45), while junior Maddy Scozzie (Ashburn, VA/Broad Run) tied for fourth on beam (9.45) and placed sixth on bars (9.40).

Also for the Red Dragons, sophomore Bri Michaels (Charlestown, RI/East Greenwich) finished fifth on bars with a career-high 9.425 and junior Meghan Goyden (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) ended sixth on both beam (9.30) and floor (9.575).

Southern Connecticut's Nicole Pruchnik won floor exercise with a 9.825. Alexandra Avendano finished second on vault (9.60) and Rachel de la Torre was second on bars (9.60).

Cortland will compete at Air Force Academy in Colorado on Saturday, Feb. 14.

WRESTLING

Cortland won two matches by pin and three others by forfeit on the way to its easy 43-3 victory over the Lakers. The Red Dragons improved to 9-3 on the season and Oswego dropped to 2-11.

Cortland opened with a 6-0 win by sophomore Mat Bradice (Mastic/William Floyd) at 125 pounds and an 8-6 victory by senior Paul Fields (New City/Clarkstown North) at 133 pounds. Freshman Adrian Berry (Uniondale) followed with a 13-5 major decision at 141 pounds to give the Red Dragons a 10-0 lead.

Freshman Greg Chery (Ronkonkoma/Connetquot) earned an 8-3 decision at 149 pounds to extend the lead to 13-0. Oswego picked up its lone victory of the afternoon when Tyler Silverthorn overcame an early 5-0 deficit to win 10-7 at 157 pounds.

Cortland registered the maximum 30 possible team points over the final five bouts. Junior Brian Vutianitis (Warwick Valley) pinned his opponent in 2:45 at 174 pounds and senior Lance Moore (Johnson City) recorded a pin in 3:42 at 285 pounds. Sophomore Colin Barber (Westfield, NJ), senior Tyler Beckwith (Greene) and junior Joe Giaramita (Elwood/John H. Glenn) each won by forfeit at 165, 174 and 197 pounds, respectively.

The Red Dragons are off for 10 days before concluding their regular-season schedule at home versus 10th-ranked Ithaca College on Wednesday, Feb. 18 at 7 p.m.
