CORTLAND, N.Y. – The nationally sixth-ranked Cortland wrestling team overcame an early 6-0 deficit and earned a 29-13 victory over Delaware Valley University Friday night in Moffett Gym. The Red Dragons improve to 10-2 with the win and the Aggies drop to 3-4.

Sophomore Brenden Velez (Bristow, VA/Brentsville) opened up the match for Delaware Valley with a 6-0 decision over freshman Hector Guerrero (Plainedge) at 125 pounds. The Aggies won the next bout at 133 pounds with a 5-0 decision for nationally eighth-ranked senior Conor Kirkegard (New Milford, CT) over junior Andrew Roden (Kings Park). The Red Dragons then went on to win the next five bouts.

Sophomore Derak Heyman (Tioga Center/Tioga) earned a 5-2 decision at 141 pounds and freshman Austin Whitney (Mexico/Mexico Academy) pinned his opponent in 4:12 at the 149-pound weight class putting Cortland up 9-6. Nationally first-ranked junior Bobby Dierna (Webster/Wayne) recorded a 21-5 technical fall in 2:24 at 157 pounds and classmate Colin Barber (Westfield, NJ) won an 8-3 decision at 165 pounds. Senior Lou Puca (Huntington), ranked fourth nationally at 174 pounds, followed up by pinning his opponent in 3:16, increasing the score-line to 23-6 for the Red Dragons.

Senior Nick Della Fera (Wayne, NJ, Wayne Valley) earned a 5-1 decision over Cortland's junior Mike Beckwith (Greene). Fourth-ranked senior Joe Giaramita (Elwood/John H. Glenn) pinned his opponent in 1:31 at 197 pounds to extend the lead to 29-9 for the Red Dragons. Junior Zach Roseberry (Nokesville, VA/Brentsville), ranked second at 285 pounds, capped off the night for Delaware Valley with a 12-3 major decision over junior Nicholas Lupi (Huntington).
