CORTLAND, N.Y. -
Alexandrea Flint (Dalton/Keshequa) threw a four-hit shutout as Cortland defeated Geneseo, 1-0, to advance to the championship round of the SUNYAC softball tournament.
The top-seeded Red Dragons (34-9) will face Buffalo State Sunday at 11 a.m. in the championship round needing one win in two tries for the conference title. Cortland has now advanced to the SUNYAC tournament championship round 19 straight years from 1998-2016.
Buffalo State, the sixth seed in the six-team tournament, advanced to the final day by eliminating both second-seeded Plattsburgh, 6-3, and Geneseo, 5-2. The Bengals have won three straight games since losing to Cortland, 8-0, in the opening game of the tournament Thursday.
Flint struck out four batters and walked two to improve to 16-3 on the season. She unofficially threw 55 of her 75 pitches in the game for strikes. Flint outdueled Geneseo's Mikayla Moore, who allowed only six hits and one unearned run over six innings with two strikeouts and three walks.
Cortland scored the game's lone run in the bottom of the fourth.
Kaleigh Churchill (Camillus/West Genesee) led off with a single.
Mikayla Shade (Bethlehem) hit a ball back to Moore in the circle, but her throw to force out Churchill at second sailed high.
Andrea Schoonmaker (Marlboro) reached on a bunt single to load the bases, and
Erin Wolstenholme (Oneonta) hit a deep fly ball to center for a sac fly to easily score Churchill.
The Red Dragons threatened in the second when singles by Schoonmaker and Wolstenholme, combined with an error after Wolstenholme's hit, put runners on second and third with one out. A squeeze bunt attempt, however, was popped up and turned into a double play at third to end the inning.
Geneseo left runners on first and second in the second inning and a runner on second in the fourth. Emily Martin led off the sixth with a single, but with one out Churchill snagged a hard line drive at third base and threw to double off Martin at first to end the inning.
In the seventh, pinch hitter Alyssa Presutti drew a one-out walk and Abby Dennett hit a liner that left that appeared to be a single. The ball bounced in front of Cortland centerfielder
Jamie Bucci (Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow), who quickly threw to second base for a force out after a stretch by second baseman
Rosie Phillips (Geneva/Our Lady of Mercy). Flint struck out the next batter to end the game.
Wolstenholme finished 2-for-2 with a double and RBI and Schoonmaker went 2-for-3. Churchill was 1-for-2 with a walk and
Diane Cork (Wayland/Wayland-Cohocton) reached base twice on a pair of walks. Jenna Phillips and Taylor Fedor each went 1-for-2 for Geneseo (25-17 after loss to Buffalo State).
