Cortland Gymnasts Open Season With Home Dual Loss to Brockport

Meghan Cobb won uneven bars with a 9.375
CORTLAND, N.Y. – Sophomore Rachel Filipski (Lancaster) and senior Meghan Cobb (Hobe Sound, FL/Clark Advanced Learning Ctr.) each won individual events as Cortland opened its women's gymnastics season with a 185-30-183.75 dual-meet loss to visiting Brockport.

Filipski won vault with a 9.70 and also placed second on floor exercise with a 9.65. She was the lone all-around competitor at the meet and recorded a score of 35.95. Cobb won uneven bars with a 9.375.

Senior Michaela Stumpf (Williamsville/Williamsville South) finished second on bars with a 9.325 and junior Bailey Gildemeyer (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) was runner-up on balance beam with a 9.375. Freshman Sidney McConnell (Winchester, CA/Vista Murrieta) tied for third on vault (9.50), senior Tara Sweeney (Staten Island/Notre Dame Academy) finished fourth on beam (9.15), and sophomore Lily Szafranski (Williamsville/Williamsville South) was fourth on floor exercise (9.425).

Brockport was led victories from Kendra Bushart on beam (9.425) and Brittany Vasile on floor (9.725).

The teams were just about even through two rotations. Cortland won vault by less than a tenth of a point and Brockport on bars by four tenths of a point and the Golden Eagles led 93.325-93.00 at the midway point of the meet. The big difference came on balance beam, with Brockport winning by almost 1.2 points (45.225-44.05). The squads were practically even on floor, with Brockport holding a very slight edge at 46.75-46.70.

Cortland will travel to New Haven, Conn., on Sunday at 1 p.m. for a tri-meet with West Chester University (Pa.) and host Southern Connecticut State University, both Division II squads.
