Balanced Effort Leads Cortland Gymnasts Past Rhode Island College

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Four different Cortland gymnasts won events as the Red Dragons defeated visiting Rhode Island College, 185.85-179.30, in a dual meet at Corey Gym.

Rachel Filipski (Lancaster) won vault with a 9.50 and was fifth on floor exercise with a 9.525, and Mia Dimartino (Charlotte, NC/South Mecklenburg) tied for first on uneven bars with a 9.025. Emma Schulz (Poughquag/Arlington) earned a win on balance beam (9.675) and tied for third on floor (9.60), while Lily Szafranski (Williamsville/Williamsville South) won floor (9.675) and tied for third on vault (9.225).

Bailey Gildemeyer (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) was runner-up to Schulz on beam (9.575) and tied for third, along with Schulz, on floor (9.60). Julie Giardina (Wantagh) placed second on floor (9.65) and tied for fifth place on beam (9.35).

In all, Cortland recorded 20 total top-six finishes at the meet, including a sweep of the top six spots on floor. Sidney McConnell (Winchester, CA/Vista Murrieta) tied for third on vault (9.225) and was fourth on bars (8.85). Lindsay Riggs (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA/Trabuco Hills) finished third on bars (8.975) and tied for fifth on beam (9.35), and Genna Orlik (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue) placed third on beam (9.50).

Ashley Scarantino (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area) turned in a fifth-place effort on bars (8.75), Emily Speciale (San Antonio, TX/James Madison) finished sixth on bars (8.725) and tied for sixth on floor (9.40), and McKenna Passalacqua (Whitesboro) was sixth on vault (9.175).

For RIC, Miranda Murphy tied for first on bars (9.025) and scored a 36.775 in the all-around. Erin Shea finished second on vault (9.30).

Cortland will return to action at Ithaca College this Wednesday, Feb. 14, at 7 p.m. as part of a "Rumble and Tumble" event. Formerly known as "Beauty and the Beast," the event features Cortland and Ithaca facing each other in both women's gymnastics and wrestling competitions. Cortland hosted the two-sport event last winter.
