Cortland sophomore outfielder
Colin BeVard (Syracuse/West Genesee), sophomore second baseman
Garrett Heaton (East Patchogue/Bellport) and junior pitcher
Noah Ernst (Catskill/Homeschooled) have been honored for their efforts during nationally top-ranked Cortland's season-opening weekend sweep at 18th-ranked Salisbury University.
BeVard has been chosen as the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Baseball Athlete of the Week and has also been named to the D3baseball.com National "Team of the Week" for the week ending Feb. 18. Heaton was also chosen to the D3baseball.com National "Team of the Week," and Ernst was selected as the SUNYAC Pitcher of the Week.
The D3baseball.com team consists of the top players for the week, by position, among all Division III schools nationally. Heaton was the lone second baseman chosen, while BeVard was one of three outfielders to earn recognition.
BeVard batted .667 (6-for-9) with a homer, double, four RBI, four walks, two steals and five runs in the two-game sweep. In the Red Dragons' 9-6, 14-inning win Sunday, BeVard went 4-for-5 with a double, three walks (two intentional), a steal, an RBI and three runs scored. He reached base safely in his final seven plate appearances. The previous day he hit a three-run homer and finished 2-for-4 with a walk, a steal, three RBI and two runs in a 5-4 victory.
Heaton batted .500 (4-for-8) with two walks, two runs and an RBI in the two games. He also handled 13 fielding chances (10 assists, three putouts) without an error. Heaton went 3-for-5 with a run scored in Saturday's 5-4 win and was 1-for-3 with two walks, an RBI and run scored off the bench in Sunday's 14-inning victory.
Ernst pitched five and a third innings of scoreless relief in Cortland's win Sunday. He allowed just one hit and three walks and fanned four batters. Ernst entered the game with two outs in the bottom of the seventh after Salisbury tied the game at 6-6. After an initial walk, he got the next batter out to end the inning, then retired the side in order in the eighth and ninth. He allowed one walk each in the 10th and 11th and hit a batter in the 12th. The lone hit he allowed was an infield single to start the 13th.
Cortland (2-0) will play a three-game series this weekend at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va. The teams are scheduled for a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. and a single game Sunday at noon.
