The SUNY Cortland men’s and women’s intercollegiate athletic program finished in 17th place in the 2009-10 Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup competition among the approximately 440 eligible NCAA Division III programs competing nationally for the prestigious honor. The award is presented annually by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), Learfield Sports and USA Today recognizing overall excellence among collegiate athletic programs. Cortland is one of only six schools nationwide, and the only New York institution, to place in the top 20 each of the 15 years the standings have been compiled on the Division III level. The Red Dragons were the top finisher this season among New York Div. The SUNY Cortland intercollegiate athletics program finished first in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Commissioner's Cup standings for the 2009-10 school year. Cortland has won the Commissioner’s Cup, which is awarded for overall sports excellence, in 13 of the 14 years that it has been awarded, including the last seven seasons. Cortland finished with an average score of 8.46 points. Mike Urtz, SUNY Cortland’s interim director of athletics since January, was appointed on May 1 as the College’s full-time director of athletics. Urtz served as interim director following Joan Sitterly’s retirement as director – a position she held since April 2004. Urtz is a 1994 Cortland graduate and also earned his master’s degree from the College in 1999. He was the Red Dragons’ associate director of athletics from 2004-09 and served as interim director from November 2007 through April 2008 in addition to his most recent interim role. The SUNY Cortland Athletics Department and the YWCA of Cortland will be hosting Girls’ Day Out on Saturday, Jan. 30, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at SUNY Cortland’s Park Center. Girls in grades 5-8 are invited for activities that include participation in soccer, volleyball, gymnastics, dance, swimming and rock climbing with SUNY Cortland women student-athletes and coaches. There will also be an interactive career fair, and participants will be able to watch the Red Dragon women’s gymnastics and women’s ice hockey teams compete. The registration cost is $7 per person if received by January 20 (the cost after January 20 is $10 per person). Cortland Internet Radio will be presenting a series of encore Red Dragon athletic broadcasts from the 2009 calendar year on Jan. 2-3, 2010. The schedule of broadcasts includes the men's lacrosse team's NCAA Div. III Championship Game victory over Gettysburg College, the baseball team's SUNYAC title game win over Brockport and the field hockey team's double overtime win versus The College of New Jersey to complete a perfect regular season. A total of 13 sports will be covered during the two-day event. (NOTE: The story incorrectly implies that Cortland online broadcasts began in 2006. SUNY Cortland Director of Athletics Dr. Joan Sitterly has announced her retirement, effective Feb. 23, 2010. Mike Urtz, Cortland’s Associate Director of Athletics, will assume the position of Interim Director of Athletics on Jan. 1, 2010, and a search for a full-time director will begin immediately.
