A veteran of the U.S. Army's 10th Mountain Division during World War II, Arthur Thompson excelled in football, track and skiing at Cortland. Thompson was a Red Letter winner with the ski team and was vice president of the Student Council and the Senior Class. He began his teaching career as a coach and physical education teacher in the Watertown schools from 1948 to 1956. He was an elementary principal at Carthage from 1956 to 1962 before going to Lake Placid to assume a position as supervising princicpal.
Thompson served as chairman of the Educational Liaison Committee for the 1980 Winter Olympic Games at Lake Placid; he has been a member of the executive committee of the NYS Council of School District Administrators as well as the Liberal Studies Advisory Committee at North Country Community College. Thompson has also been listed in "Who's Who in American Education."
UPDATE: Thompson passed away on Dec. 13, 2014. He had retired as the Superintendent in Lake Placid, New York in June 1980. He was acknowledged for his accomplishments when he was inducted into the Lake Placid Hall of Fame in 2002. Thompson volunteered at the Lake Placid Winter Olympics and various other winter sport venues and activities.
