Deborah Chin, the director of athletics since 1993 at the University of New Haven (Conn.) was coach of the perennially strong New Haven volleyball teams between 1975-93.
During that time, her teams had a 576-178 record and advanced to Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) and NCAA regional tournaments in 13 different years. Four times her squads finished in the top five nationally.
A six-time conference and regional coach of the year, Chin has conducted volleyball clinics internationally in Poland, China and Costa Rica.
In the U.S. she has served at the highest levels of volleyball ruling bodies and currently sits on the NCAA Women’s Committee on Committees. Chin also coached softball and women’s basketball at New Haven in the 1970's. She has also officiated ALAW basketball national championships.
Chin began her career as a physical education teacher in Stamford and New Haven. She coordinated women’s athletics at New Haven from 1975-79 and was associate director of women’s athletics from 1979-93.
A native of Bellmore, N.Y., she earned a B.S.E. from Cortland in 1968 and an M.S.P.E. from the University of North Carolina in Greensboro in 1971. She played basketball while at Cortland.
