Dudley Hare

While an undergraduate at Cortland, Hare lettered in soccer and basketball, and served as freshman class president, Glee Club president, Senior Demonstration chairman and manager of the Music Council. He also participated in track, lacrosse and swimming, and he was a member of the Christian Union and the Varsity C-Club.

After graduating from Cortland, Hare was head of elementary health and physical education for Rye Neck Schools where he also coached baseball, football and basketball. He later became head of health and physical education at the Rye Country Day School and the Buckley School in New York City. He was the 1955 chairman of Section 9 (Westchester and Putnam Counties) for the NYS Public High School Athletic Association, and was a Ford Foundation consultant.

In addition to his Cortland degree, Hare earned a master’s degree at Columbia University Teacher’s College where he also completed work for a doctorate.

Hare served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1945, attended Officer’s Candidate School in naval aviation, and devoted considerable time to the Navy’s program for survival at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Fla. A lieutenant commander, he was instrumental in the publication of the Navy booklet, “How to Survive on Land and Sea.” He also was attached to the U.S. Pacific Fleet at Camp Kearny and Camp Elliott where he instructed Naval personnel in survival training.

Hare died in 1957 as a result of an automobile accident.
