Fred Bruntrager was a standout baseball pitcher and a starting basketball point guard for the Red Dragons. He's been a long-time successful coach at Clarkstown (N.Y.) North High School since 1972.
* A native of New Hyde Park, N.Y., he earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Cortland in 1970 and a Master of Science in Physical Education from Cortland in 1972.
* Three-year varsity baseball pitcher (1968-70), and three-year varsity basketball point guard (1967-70), along with one season in each sport on freshman teams. Baseball Red Letter Award winner as a junior and basketball Red Letter winner as both a sophomore and a senior.
* Graduated as Cortland baseball's career leader with 15 wins, 214 strikeouts, 26 appearances and 189.7 innings pitched. His 214 strikeouts still rank fifth in school history, and his 1.85 career ERA ranks 10th. Set school single-season strikeout records three straight years (63 as sophomore, 73 as junior, 78 as senior).
* Three-time All-SUNYAC baseball selection, including twice on the first team, and the only pitcher in Cortland history to throw two no-hitters (1968 and 1970). Team won SUNYAC title during his sophomore season.
* Led basketball team in assists three straight years and was a team captain as a senior. Team tied for the SUNYAC title during his junior season.
* Earned Chancellor's Award for outstanding scholastic and athletic achievement in the SUNY system.
* Drafted by and signed professional contract with the Detroit Tigers organization in 1970. Named a Midwest League all-star after posting a 10-5 record with 132 strikeouts and a league-leading 1.67 ERA in 135 innings.
* Physical education teacher and coach at Clarkstown North High School from 1972-2003. Coached varsity baseball (1976-91) as well as junior varsity girls soccer (1984-86), junior varsity wrestling (1973-74), freshman football (1972-80) and modified boys basketball (1972-74). Also has coached girls golf there since 2008. Honored in 1991 as Rockland County's baseball career leader with 260 victories.
* Clarkstown North director of athletics from 1984-2003 (and interim AD from 2003-05), physical education department chair from 1980-2003, and health education department chair from 1980-92.
* Treasurer of Section One Baseball Coaches Association from 1984-2001, and served on and chaired numerous committees for New York State Public High School Athletic Association Section One Athletics.
* Ran the Clarkstown North chapter of "Varsity Athletes Against Substance Abuse" for more than 15 years.
